What is Ambient Lighting?

Ambient lighting, often referred to as general lighting, is the primary source of illumination in a room. Unlike task lighting, which is focused on specific activities like reading or cooking, ambient lighting provides a consistent level of diffused light that fills the entire space. Its purpose is to ensure that an area is evenly lit, which is essential for visual comfort. Ambient lighting is also useful for highlighting architectural features through uplighting.

When it comes to ambient lighting, it is essential to consider colour temperature to suit your space. Here at Allera we love warm light, between 2700K and 3000K to create a warm atmosphere within a space. Dimmability is also something to consider for creating ambient light within your space - the ability to dim everything down can create a relaxing atmosphere.

So, how can you create ambient light in your space? Read on to explore the different ways you can craft the perfect atmosphere in your space!

Strip Lighting

Strip lighting is a simple but effective way to create ambient lighting in a space. Strip lighting can be recessed or surface mounted, depending on the type of extrusion used. When used in wall coving and beneath benches, strip lighting creates beautiful ambient lighting within a space.

See below some recent projects where strip lighting has been used in residential spaces, creating an even layer of light across each space.

Wall Lighting

Wall Lighting is another effective way of creating ambient light within your space. We love to use wall uplights to shine light up onto the ceiling, using reflected light across the ceiling to illuminate a room.

The Arkos Lip Wall Light and the Unios Vespa Wall Light are two of our favourites for uplighting, creating a beautiful diffused light across a space. See below some projects which demonstrate the beauty of these lights.

Floor and table lamps are another way to create ambient lighting throughout a room. The warm, diffused light provided by a lamp offers a beautiful glow throughout a space, while serving as a focal point for the room.

Incorporating ambient lighting into your space not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also creates a welcoming and functional environment, proving that the right light can transform any room.
