As the clocks move back in anticipation of winter, don’t let this be the end to enjoying your garden and outdoor spaces. Summer in Australia has a great sense of energy about it as we spend quality time having fun outdoors with friends and family, but the other three seasons of the year also provide us with colour, depth and life. To help us appreciate all the different seasons that mother nature has to offer, good lighting is a key design tool that helps us create depth and interest into a space long after the sun has gone down.

The idea is to create an interesting blend of light and shadow, hence why the trusty old flood light washing over the entire garden may not be doing you many favours. Autumn provides us with some amazing colours and textures with the changing of leaves through to the eventual bare bones of our deciduous friends. It’s these sorts of things that we can often miss when we leave and return home from work in the darker months.

Think about the things you love about your outdoor area. Is there a beautiful tree or two that you would love to highlight, a pathway or garden bed that requires illumination, or are you thinking about getting the whole area landscaped? When you think about it, the garden is the extension of your home and by lighting it you are opening your house up to the natural surroundings.
